Q

What happens as you go down group 1 metals ? Why?

A

The Alkali metals get more reactive

-outer shell electrons is further away from nucleus - easier to lose - less energy needed to lose

(Atomic radius is larger as you go down group 1 in the periodic table)

Q

What are the properties of alkali metals?

A

Low melting and boiling point

Low density - lithium, potassium, sodium float on water

Very soft - cut with a knife

No covalent bonding . Only ionic bonding (think about it, it’s easier to let go of one electron than share with other atoms to have a full shell)
