Alkanes Flashcards

1
Q

What are alkanes?

A

They have single bond’s and they have more carbon atoms than hydrogen atoms. This makes them have a high melting and boiling point.

Q

How to you Separate different types of alkanes?

A

you put the crude oil through a fraction distillation tower, were they are heated to different temperatures and drawn off at different hight’s depending on the boiling point’s of the various alkanes.

Q

How are names of alkanes formed?

A

The prefix tell’s you the number of carbon atom’s in each molecule, and the suffix tell’s you the type of bond’s holding it together.if it end’s with ANE it has single bond’s and if it end’s with ENE, then it has double bond’s.
