Alkanes and Alkenes Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a hydrocarbon?
Any compound that is formed from hydrogen and carbon atoms ONLY.
What is the alkane general formula?
CnH2n+2
What are alkanes used as often?
Fuels.
Are all carbon-carbon bonds single or double - and what does this mean?
They are single, meaning they’re SATURATED.
What is a cycloalkane?
Cycloalkanes are another homologous series of hydrocarbons. They are in a circle/cycle shape.
What is the general formula of a cycloalkane?
CnH2n - twice as many hydrogens as carbons.
What do cycloalkanes form?
A loop - because of this, they have to have at least 3 carbons.
Are hydrocarbons insoluble or soluble in water.
They are insoluble.
What are cycloalkanes used as?
as a solvent to dissolve other hydrocarbons and as a fuel.
What is an alkene?
A homologous series of hydrocarbons with one C=C functional group.
What is the General Formula of an alkene?
CnH2n.
Do alkenes have a C=C bond in it and what does this mean?
Yes, this means it’s unsaturated.
What are alkenes used for?
To make polymers and alcohols.
