Alkenes Flashcards
(8 cards)
What is the reaction when hydrogen is reacted with cyclopentene?
Hydrogenation
What are the reagents and conditions needed for cyclopentene to make the cyclopentanol?
Steam and an acid catalyst is needed
What are the bond angles in an alkene and why?
It is 120 as there are three regions of electron density around the carbon atoms. These three regions repel one another as far away as possible which then creates a bong angle of 120.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the combustion of polymers?
The polymers are not sent to landfill sites where they will take a long period time to decompose. However, hazardous gases are released into the atmosphere.
What is the product (waster gas) when you burn PVC?
Hydrochloric acid
Give a type of degradeable polymer and state what makes these polymers break down.
Photodegradeable polymers will break down in the presence of UV light. This is because the bond breaks in UV light.
What does carbon neutral mean?
It does not produce any less or more carbon than it is taken in.
What makes a reaction heterolytic?
The curly arrow shows the movement of a pair of electrons, so bond breaks down when both electrons move to one of the bonded atoms.
