Alkenes Flashcards
(12 cards)
Alkenes are…
Unsaturated hydrocarbons
What is the general formula of alkenes
CnH2n
What are stereoisomers?
Stereoisomers are compounds with the same structural formula but with different arrangement in space.
What are Z isomers?
When the different groups are on the same side
What are E isomers?
When the different groups are on different / opposite sides.
explain the trend in boiling points for straight chained alkanes
as the chain gets longer the boiling point increases this is because there are more intermolecular forces acting upon the molecule.
what does “saturated hydrocarbons” mean
A compound that is made up of only hydrogen and carbon atoms with at least one double bond between 2 of the carbons in the chain.
what is the equation for the reaction of propane with chlorine in the presence of uv light to form 1,2-dichloropropane.
C3H8+2Cl2—–>C3H6Cl2+2HCL
why do branched alkanes have lower boiling points?
branched alkanes have weaker intermolecular forces because of the smaller area of contact between the molecules. so less energy is needed to overcome the intermolecular force.
what is meant by the term stereoisomers
stereoisomers are compounds with the same structural formula but with a different arrangement in space
what is an E stereoisomer in the cis/trans system
trans
what are the conditions when reacting water with alkenes?
water has to be in the form of steam and in the presence of an acid catalyst
