1
Q

What type of mechanism do alkenes undergo

A

Electrophilic

2
Q

What happens in an electrophilic addition reaction

A
C=C attacks electrophile
Electrophile bond breaks
c=c breaks
Half electrophile on one C
C+ formed
Other half of electrophile attacks c+
3
Q

What is an electrophile

A

Electron pair acceptor

4
Q

Ethene + water –>

Concentrated sulfuric acid catalyst

A

Alcohol

5
Q

Test for alkenes

A

Shake alkene in bromine water

Orange to colourless

6
Q

Alkene + hydrogen halide –>

A

Halogenoalkane

7
Q

Primary carbocation structure

A

H
|
R-C-H
+

8
Q

Secondary carbocation structure

A

R
|
R-C-H
+

9
Q

Tertiary carbocation structure

A

R
|
R-C-R
+

10
Q

Why are tertiary carbocations more stable than primary carbocations

A

Carbocations with more alkyl groups are more stable because the alkyl groups feed electrons towards the positive charge

11
Q

What is a substituted alkene

A

Alkene that’s had a H atom substituted for another atom or group

12
Q

Dehydration of alcohols mechanism

A

Lone pair of electrons on the oxygen of the OH group on the alcohol attacks the H+ from the H2SO4 catalyst
The positively charged oxygen pulls electrons away from the carbon. Arrow from C-O goes to O+
H2O molecule leaves creating an unstable carbocation
Arrow goes from H-C to C-C
H is removed and C=C formed
