Alkenes, Polymers And Ethanol Flashcards
(18 cards)
What are the two types of ethanol production
Ethene and steam (hydration)
And
Fermentation
Describe the process by which ethanol is created from ethene amd steam
The Athens produces from crude oil cracking reacts with steam to create ethanol
The Reaction needs temperature of 300 degrees C And pressure of 60-70 atmospheres
The Catalyst used is phosphoric acid
Describe the process by which ethanol is produced by fermentation
Raw fermentaion material which is sugar (glucose) is converted to ethanol by fermenting it using yeast
This Process requires temperature of 30 degrees C
Name the advantages of ethanol production by fermentation
Process uses simpler and cheaper equipment than using ethene
Raw materials are all renewable resources ((sugar)sugar cane) is grown as a major crop in several parts of the world including poor countries and yeast is easy to grow
Name the disadvantages of production of ethanol by fermentation
Very slow
Very impure-requires further processing
High labour costs
Name the advantages of ethanol production by ethene and steam
Very fast
Pure product
Low labour costs
Name the disadvantages of ethanol production by ethene and steam
Raw material is a finite resource so even tho cheap now it will get very expensive
Continuous process at high temperature and pressure so expensive equipment needed
What is the symbol equation for ethene and steam reaction
C(2)H(4)+H(2)O—
What do all alkenes have
A double bond between two of the carbon atoms in their chain
Alkenes are unsaturated molecules, what does this mean
It means that they can make more bonds - the double bond can open up allowing the two carbon atoms to bond with other atoms
What is the alkene general formula
C(n)H(2n)
How many carbons does ethene have
2
Which alkene has three carbons
Propene
Which alkene has four carbons
Butene
How many carbons does hexene have
6
What is a polymer
a substance which has a molecular structure built up chiefly or completely from a large number of similar units bonded together, e.g. many synthetic organic materials used as plastics and resins.
What is a monomer
a molecule that can be bonded to other identical molecules to form a polymer.
Why is carbon monoxide dangerous
Stops blood cells doing their job of carrying oxygen
Cos combines with haemoglobin in blood cells meaning the blood can carry less oxygen
Lack of oxygen can lead to fainting, a coma or even death
