What is an Umbra?
The darkest part of a shadow, where the light is completely blocked (usually the center of shadow)
What is an eclipse?
when one celestial body (eg. The moon) moves into the shadow of another celestial body (eg. The earth)
What eclipse (Solar or Lunar) is occurring if the Earth is in between the Moon and Sun?
Lunar eclipse
What is a Penumbra?
A Penumbra is the outer part of a shadow that gets a small amount of light (usually outsides of the shadow)
How is a shadow created?
A shadow is created by an object blocking a light source. Light cannot pass through an object.
What is the difference between a Solar and Lunar eclipse?
A Solar eclipse is when the Sun gets darker, and the Moon is between the Sun and Earth. A Lunar eclipse is when the Moon gets darker, and the Earth is between the Moon and Sun.
What is the difference between a New Moon and a Full Moon?
A New Moon is when the Moon is blocking the Sun from the Earth(order is Earth, Moon, Sun - from left to right), and a Full Moon is when the Earth is blocking the Moon from the Sun (order is Moon, Earth, Sun - from left to right).
What is happening when the Moon is waning?
When the Moon is waning, the bright side of the Moon is getting smaller.
What is a quarter Moon?
A quarter Moon is when half of the Moon is illuminated
What is happening when the Moon is waxing?
When the Moon is waxing, the bright side of the Moon is getting bigger.
What degrees is the Earth’s axis on?
23.5 degrees
What is a crescent Moon?
A crescent Moon is when the bright side of the moon is smaller than a semicircle
What is a Solstice?
When the poles of the Earth are as far or close to the Sun for the year.
What is a gibbous Moon?
A gibbous Moon is when the bright side of the moon is larger than a semicircle and smaller than a circle
True or False: We only ever see one side of the Moon.
True
How long does it take the Moon to orbit the Earth?
27.3 Days.
What is a Equinox?
When the day time and night time are almost equal.
What are Spring tides?
Spring tides occur when the Earth is in line with the Sun and Moon (Earth is in the middle). Spring tides create higher high tides, and lower low tides.
How are tides formed?
Tides are formed by the gravitational pull of the Moon. The side of the Earth that is closest and furthest (opposite) to the Moon will be high tide, and the other sides that aren’t in high tide, will be low tide.
What are Neap tides?
Neap tides occur when the Earth at a right angle to the Sun and Moon (with the Earth in the middle). Neap tides create lower high tides, and higher low tides.
What are the 4 seasons?
Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring
Where in the world do they only experience 2 seasons?
Countries near the equator, dry and wet.
