(12 cards)
What are the 7 characteristics of living organisms?
Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
What is homeostasis?
The maintenance of a constant internal environment.
What is metabolism?
The sum of all chemical reactions in the body.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the cell’s activities and contains genetic material.
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell.
What organelles are found only in plant cells?
Cell wall, chloroplasts, and a large central vacuole.
What is diffusion?
The movement of particles from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
What is osmosis?
The movement of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated one through a partially permeable membrane.
What is active transport?
The movement of substances against the concentration gradient using energy.
What are the building blocks of proteins?
Amino acids.
What enzyme breaks down starch?
Amylase.
What test is used for glucose?
Benedict’s test (heat and look for brick-red precipitate).
