(14 cards)
What does VSPER stand for?
Valence Shell Electron Pair Repulsion
What is the law of VSPER?
Electron domains will always repel each other.
What is an electron domain?
An area where electrons can be found. Counts location, NOT quantity.
What is a Crystal Lattice?
How Ionic compounds form as a solid, ex: salt (NaCl)
How come molecules have shape?
Because electrons repel each other.
What is Electron Domain Geometry?
A diagram of a molecule that includes all electron domains.
What is Molecular Shape?
A diagram of a molecule that only includes bonds.
What is electricity?
The flow of individual charges (electrons)
What does ionizing mean?
Something develops a charge, ex: salt dissolving in water ionizes water.
What is a crystal lattice comprised of?
Individual ions that join to neutralize, exchange electrons.
What is a covalent crystal comprised of?
Neutral covalent bonds, decomposes into neutral molecules.
What is electronegativity defined by?
How close an atoms electrons are to it’s nucleus, the amount of protons in the nucleus.
What is electronegativity?
A measurement of how much an element attracts a bonded electron.
