be kind as they should have strong morals

What is hypocrisy?
when gentlemen were publicly snobbish about disreputable places but then secretly visited them at night
what were gentlemen expected to pay to keep activities private and what did this make them vulnerable?
pay large sums to keep their activities such as sex private and make them vulnerable to blackmail

the industrial
as it was set in the industrial revolution, what did this mean for the working class compared to the upper class?
it was crowded and working class people had to live in slums and poor quality houses, whilst upper classes lived in a “great air of wealth and comfort”
how were the streets described in this era?
narrow and poorly lit and known for smoke due to the burning of coal e.g the fog
what is Hyde often associated with?
the less respectable parts of London- the “dismal quarter of Soho” where “rugged children” huddle in doorways
many gentlemen did enter these less respectable areas as there was a good chance of not being recognised, what did Jekyll do when he entered these areas?
He changed into Hyde- he fully changed who he was so he wouldn’t be noticed- all about reputation

What did Evangelicalism teach?
taught people are naturally sinful, and its up to individuals to seek forgiveness- Jekyll is critical of sin- he creates Hyde to be rid of himself of his “extraneous evil”

How does Darwins book of “On the Origin of Species” link to Hyde?
as it claimed that humans came from apes- Hyde is described as less evolved as he is “hardly human” an “animal within” “deformed” and “like a monkey”
