ALL RENEWABLE RESOURCES Flashcards
(17 cards)
Where do renewable resources come from?
Natural resources that
are naturally replenished such as
sunlight, wind and water.
What are the types of renewable resources?
- Solar
- Wind
- Water
- Geothermal
- Biofuels
What are the two types of solar energy?
- Photovoltaic
- Solar-thermal
What is photovoltaic?
Photons from light energy knocks
electrons off the silicon atoms,
producing electricity.
What is solar-thermal?
Use mirrors to focus sunlight to heat
up water, turning a turbine/generator.
What are the downsides of solar energy?
Daytime use only
How is wind energy achieved?
- Wind is captured by windmill blades
- Spins a turbine/generator
- Generates electricity
What are the downsides of wind energy?
- Depends on weather
- Need massive sites
What are the two types of water energy?
- Hydro
- Tidal
What is hydro?
Harnesses power of gravity’s effect
on water
What is tidal?
Harnesses power of the moon’s
gravitational pull, on water.
How is geothermal energy achieved?
- Cold water is pumped in
- Hot water is extracted
- Steam turns the turbines
4.Generator generates electricity
Where is geothermal energy produced?
Volcanic regions
How is biofuel produced?
From byproducts of agriculture
industry
What are some examples of biofuel?
- Woodchips
- Crops
- Fermentation of wastes / crops
Where is biofuel often used?
in conjunction with fossil fuels to complement power generation.
Why don’t we use renewable energy?
- Renewable energy can’t be stored
easily to be used whenever we need
it. - If there is little wind or sun, there
may not be enough power. - Fossil fuels can be stored and used
when needed.
