All vertebrae and Cervical Vertebrae Flashcards
(18 cards)
Body/centrum
anterior (all vertebrae except C1/atlas)
vertebral/neural arch
posterior
lamina
posterior aspect of vertebral arch
pedicle
anterior aspect of vertebral arch
spinous process
posterior projection of vertebral arch
transverse process
lateral projection of vertebral arch
vertebral foramen
circumscribed by the vertebral arch
superior articular facet
articulates with the superior vertebra and is generally oriented posteriorly; plane/gliding type of synovial joint;
superior/cranial articular processor zygapophysis
contains the superior articular facet
inferior articular facet
articulates with the inferior vertebra and is generally oriented anteriorly; plane/glidingtype ofs ynovialjoint;
inferior/caudal articular processor zygapophysis
contains the inferior articular facet superior vertebral notch(left and right) –viewed from lateral, just an
inferior vertebral notch
viewed from lateral, just anterior to inferior articular facet
superior vertebral notch
viewed from lateral, just anterior to superior articular process
intervertebral foramen
for the passage of spinal nerves and vessels; formed by the superior and inferior vertebral notches of two adjacent vertebrae
All Cervical Vertebrae:
transverse foramen
bifid spinous process
on each transverse process; for vertebral artery, veins, and nerves of the vertebral plexus
split at its posterior extent (except for C1/atlas and C7)
The Atlas (C1 Vertebra):
anterior arch with anterior tubercle
facet for dens of axis
lateral mass
posterior arch with posterior tubercle
groove for vertebral artery and first cervical nerve
no vertebral body (centrum) on the atlas
posterior aspect of anterior arch(pivot type of synovial joint)
contains superior articular facet (atlanto-occipital joint, an ellipsoid type of synovial joint) and inferior articular facet(plane type of synovial joint)
(remnant of the spinous process)
superior aspect of posterior arch, just posterior to lateral mass
The Axis (C2 Vertebra):
dens/odontoid process
cranially projecting process on superior/cranial aspect of vertebral body that allows rotation of the axis(atlantoaxial joint, a pivot type of synovial joint)
The Typical Cervical Vertebra, C3–C7:
uncinate process or uncus
anterior and posterior tubercles of the transverse process
intertubercular lamella of transverse process
lateral lip on superior vertebral body; resists lateral displacement
Left and right
lateral; between the two tubercles of the transverse process
