Allergy and hypersensitivity Flashcards
(4 cards)
1
Q
what is an allergy and what is it mediated by
A
An abnormal immune response to an unfamiliar antigen and itis mediated by antibodies,t cells, and immune complexes
2
Q
Define atopy
A
Genetic tendency to develop allergic diseases and is associated with heightened immune response
3
Q
Causes of allergy/hypersensitivity
A
- Loss of T cell tolerance
- B/T cells are autoreactive or react to antigens that are allowed to persist
Loss of tolerance may be peripheral/central
4
Q
Discuss the Gell and Coombs classification of hypersensitivity/allergy
A
Type (in roman numerals )
- Immediate hypersensitivity mediated by IgE
- Cytolytic immune response usually mediated by IgM /IgG
- Immune complex deposition
- cell-mediated ( delayed hypersensitivity )
