Alloys Flashcards
(15 cards)
What is an alloy
Give three examples of alloys?
Explain how alloys have different properties to metals.
Are most metals in everyday use alloys or metals?
alloys
Bronze is an alloy of copper and tin
Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc
Why are alloys less malleable and ductile?
Describe the purity of the gold that is used in jewellery?
Gold used as jewellery is usually an alloy with silver, copper and zinc.
What are the proportions of the alloy in 24 carat gold?
The proportion of gold in the alloy is measured in carats. 24 carat being 100% (pure gold)
What are the proportions of gold in 18 carat gold?
18 carat being 75% gold.
What are steels?
Steels are alloys of iron that contain specific amounts of carbon and other metals.
Describe high carbon steel.
High carbon steel is strong but brittle.
Describe low carbon steel.
Low carbon steel is softer and more easily shaped.
Describe stainless steel.
Steels containing chromium and nickel (stainless steels) are hard and resistant to corrosion.
Describe the density of aluminium alloys.
Aluminium alloys are low density.
