Sphincter atrophy

Medications, or new injury
What could cause acute bladder outlet obstruction?
Due to severe prostate enlargement, blood clots, or urethral compression

With a foley catheter
When could foley catheter encourage healing of open sacral or perineal wounds?
After traumatic birth

To improve comfort for end of life

“Are you allergic to shellfish”
What postion are females in for foley catheter insertion?
Recumbant position
How should the nurse position the bed when inserting a catheter and why?
Raise the bed to prevent leaning over sterile field
What should the nurse do after lubricating the catheter and insertine until urine is obtained?
Inflate the balloon with sterile water while holding catheter in place/
What type of irrigation is not recommended and why?
Open catheter irrigation
Breaks sterile field
What are the steps of a 24 hour urine sample?
- Obtain collection container and bath pan full of ice
- Why? Slows bacterial development - Discard first void and record time of first void as “start time”
- Make sure start time and end time are visible to staff
- Place all voided urine in collection container after discarding first void and keep on ice
- If one void is discarded during 24 hour collection time, must start over?
- End time, label collection container, place in biohazard bag and take to lab immediately
Where shouldn’t the urinary collection bag be placed?
On the side rail
What type of gloves should be worn when caring for a patient with latex allergies?
Vintl gloves.
