Alzheimer's Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is Alzheimers
The loss of cognitive functioning and behavioural abilities
Mild stage (Alzheimers)
Short-term memory
Hard to learn & retain information
Intermediate stage (Alzheimers)
Older/distant memory
Difficult to recover events/people from earlier life
Severe stage (Alzheimers)
Difficulty in speaking thoughts, carrying out simple acts, recognizing people/objects
Amyloid palques
beta-amyloid 42 clump up, blocking communications and leading to cell death
Beta-amyloid 42
broken-down amyloid precursor protiens break up into pieces, including beta-amyloid 42
Neurofibrillary Tangles
abnormal accumulations of tau
Tau
Normally - support microtubules
Alzheimer’s - breaks away from microtubules, sticks together, blocks nutrients from getting to parts of the cell
TREM2
Gene that activates microglia to remove beta-amyloid plates. If this gene mutates microglia can’t do their job
Chronic inflammation
TREM2 mutates, and plaque builds up. Both microglia and astrocytes are unable to clean up and release more chemicals, further inflaming the brain
