Alzheimer's Disease Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is early onset AD?
Onset of dementia before the age of 65
What is late onset AD?
Onset of dementia after the age of 65
Genetic factors in Late onset AD?
The gene encoding for the ApoE 4 allele increases risk
Genetic Factors in early onset AD
Possession of :
Amyloid precursor protein
Presenilin- 1
Presenilin-2
Why are Adults with down symdrome more at risk of AD?
APP in on chromosome 21 which is triplicated
Overexpressed
Gross pathology of the brain
Generalised atrophy of the rain
Widened Sulci
Enlarged ventricles
Most marked in the frontal and temporal lobes
Microscopic findings in AD
Intracellular neurofibrillary tangles resulting from abnormal phosphorylation of tau protein
Intracellular cytoplasmic vacuoles
Extracellular senile plaques: beta amyloid, aluminium and silica
Amyloid deposition in the walls of the blood vessels
