Causes of civil war
Slavery- slave owners from the south disagreed with abolitionists in the north. John browns raid. Uncle Tom’s cabin
Westward expansion - New states admitted as to union and established as free or slave states
Economic differences- climate in south favoured agriculture. Very profitable and relied on slave labour
Economic effects
The economy in the north was short of raw trade with the south no longer
Farms ruined by war and crops and animals confiscated
Cotton production decreased
Inflation in south
Railroad severely damaged
Social effects
Family life disrupted
The north blockade South people suffered huge shortages
Southern towns placed under military control
600,000 dead and 400,000 wounded
Events
Battle: Shiloh( south defeat), Tennessee (south defeat)
1863 emancipation proclamation freeing slaves
Spring 1856 all major Confederate armies surrended
Consequences
State Vs federal power
Lincoln’s plan for readmitting south seen as too fast
13th amendment- abolished slavery
Black codes- passed south of limiting exslaves freedom
14th amendment- 1866 Civil Rights Act made exslaves citizens and consequences for south denying black men vote
Reconstruction
1867 Lincoln and Johnson’s plan overturned and military districts created by general
15th amendment- can’t deny vote due to race
Carpetbagger - northern opportunists
Scallywags- southern poor farmers
Sharecropping- ex slaves always in debt
Exodusters- exslaves fresh start in Kansas
