Amines Flashcards
(12 cards)
Amines
Have a N atom in place of their of a carbon in the chain
Draw they 3 types of Amines
1) Propan- 1 - amine
2) N - methylpropan-1-amine
3) N,N - dimethylpropan-1-amin
How can amines be produced
Nitration
Reduction of nitriles ( HA + CN- = nitriles)
nitrile is reduced to 1 amine
What is the production of phenylamine
Nitrobenzene is reduced to phenylamine with a tin and HCl catalyst
Why are amines weak bases
- They are proton acceptors
( The strength of the base depends on the availability of the lone pair of electrons on the N atom.
Name in order the weakest to strongest amines
primary aliphatic amines - are the strongest
Primary aromatic - are the weakest
Why is primary aliphatic amines the strongest
because the alkyl group releases electrons towards the Nitrogen atom this provides an PIE. This increases the electron density around the N atom making it a better electron pair donor.
Why are primary aromatic amine compounds the weakest
Because the aromatic rings draws electron towards it away from the nitrogen.
Where does the base strength of ammonia lie
Between aliphatic and aromatic
What are Quaternary ammonium salts used for
Cationic surfactants
conditioners
disinfectant
Ammonia and primary amines reach with both acyl chloride and acid anhydride in what type of reaction
