Amino Acid - Groups Flashcards
(7 cards)
Non-Polar Amino Acids
Glycine, Leucine, Phenylalanine, Alanine, Isoleucine, Tryptophan, Valine, Methionine, Proline
Polar Amino Acids
Serine, Tyrosine, Threonine, Asparagine, Cysteine, Glutamine
Charged (Acidic) Amino Acids
Aspartic Acid, Glutamate
Charged (Basic) Amino Acids
Lysine, Arginine, Histidine
Properties of a Non-Polar Amino Acid?
Hydrophobic with no charge. Often tucked away inside the protein core if the protein is soluble.
Properties of Polar Amino Acids?
Uncharged but can participate in hydrogen bonding through atoms such as oxygen and nitrogen. Can produce hydrogen bonds with water or other polar groups.
Properties of Charged Amino Acids?
Carry a positive (basic) or negative (acidic) charge. Often on the outside of proteins so can form ionic bonds and influence function.
