Glycine (Gly, G)
Smallest amino acid, just H as the side chain.
Alanine (Ala, A)
Has a methyl (-CH3) group as the side chain.
Valine (Val, V)
Branched-chain amino acid with -CH(CH3)2 group.
Leucine (Leu, L)
Branched-chain with -CH2-CH(CH3)2 group.
Isoleucine (Ile, I)
Branched-chain with -CH(CH3)-CH2-CH3 group.
Methionine (Met, M)
Sulfur-containing amino acid (-S-).
Proline (Pro, P)
Cyclic structure; imino acid.
Phenylalanine (Phe, F)
Aromatic amino acid with benzene ring.
Tryptophan (Trp, W)
Aromatic amino acid with an indole ring.
Serine (Ser, S)
Polar uncharged; has hydroxyl (-OH) group.
Threonine (Thr, T)
Polar uncharged; hydroxyl (-OH) and extra CH3.
Asparagine (Asn, N)
Polar uncharged; contains amide (-CONH2).
Glutamine (Gln, Q)
Polar uncharged; amide (-CONH2) with extra CH2.
Cysteine (Cys, C)
Contains sulfhydryl (-SH) group; can form disulfide bonds.
Aspartic Acid (Asp, D)
Negatively charged (acidic) with -COO- group.
Glutamic Acid (Glu, E)
Negatively charged (acidic) with -COO- and extra CH2.
Lysine (Lys, K)
Positively charged (basic) with -NH3+ at the end.
Arginine (Arg, R)
Positively charged (basic) with guanidinium group.
Histidine (His, H)
Positively charged (basic) with imidazole ring.
