An Ecosystem Is A Community Of Living Organisms Flashcards
(17 cards)
What are the four main spheres?
Biosphere, Lithosphere, Hydrosphere and Atmosphere.
What is the biosphere?
An intersection between the atmosphere, hydrosphere and lithosphere.
Can ecosystems vary in size?
Yes, they can either by as small as a puddle or as large as the ocean.
What is an ecosystem?
An ecosystem is any group of abiotic and biotic organisms interacting with each other in a self-sustaining way.
What are ecosystems formed of?
Habitats.
What are biotic organisms? Give an example.
Biotic organisms are living organisms, such as animals.
What are abiotic organisms? Give an example.
Abiotic organisms are non-living organisms, such as temperature, light and water.
What is a habitat?
A place where a population of organisms survive.
What factors affect the size of a habitat?
The amount of food, water and shelter it provides and has.
Give examples of ecosystems.
The Great Barrier Reef and Daintree Rainforest
Give examples of habitats.
Oceans, billabongs and rivers.
What is a population?
A population is a group of biotic organisms of the same species interacting and living in the same space at the same time.
Give an example of a population.
All the evergreen trees in a forest.
What is a community?
When abiotic and biotic organisms of different species interact and live in the same geographical area t the same time.
Give an example of a community.
The city, humans, stray animals and trees all exist in the city.
What happens when the abiotic conditions aren’t appropriate for a population?
They either move habitats or die out.
Why are humans so heavily reliant on ecosystems?
Ecosystems provide us with many factors, such as air, warmth, food and water. For example, animals produced carbon-dioxide which plants take in, through the process of photosynthesis, plants thus regenerate this into oxygen. They release the oxygen which allows humans to breathe.
