Anatomical Landmarks/ Regional Terms Flashcards
Memorize (77 cards)
Anterior (Ventral)
Front
Anything at the front or directed toward the front
Posterior (Dorsal)
Back
Anything at the back or directed towards the back
Superior (Cranial/Cephalic)
Directed toward the top
ex: head is superior to neck
Inferior (Caudal)
Directed toward the bottom
ex: Legs inferior to stomach
Medial
Closer to the midline of the body; further in
ex: chest is medial to shoulders
Lateral
Farther from the midline of the body; further out
ex: ears are lateral to nose
proximal
describing extremities (arms and legs), closer towards the attachment
ex: elbow is proximal to my wrist
Distal
describing extremities (arms and legs), farther from the attachment
ex: wrist is distal to my elbow
Superficial
on or closer to surface of structure or body
ex: Skin is superficial to muscles
Deep
Away from or under the surface of a structure or body
ex: Bones deep to skin
Plane
flat surface or region that a straight line could lie on/within
Section
cut through a structure along a particular plane
Sagittal section
Divides the structure into right and left sides
Midsagittal section
Specific plane that passes through the midline
and divides structure into equal left and right
Parasagittal section
Plane does not pass through midline, divides into unequal left and right
Transverse section (Horizontal section)
divides structure into superior and inferior sections (top and bottom)
Frontal Section (Coronal)
Divides the structure into anterior and posterior sections (front to back)
Oblique Plane
Passes through the body at any angle between the sagittal, transverse, or frontal plane
Body cavities
chambers within the human body
function of body cavities
protect vital organs (viscera)
allow for changes in size and shape of internal organs
Thoracic cavity
located deep to the chest wall, houses lungs and heart
pleural cavities, pericardial cavity
Pleural cavities
right and left, contain the lungs, separated by region along midline- mediastinum
Pericardial cavity
located within the mediastinum, contains the heart
Abdominopelvic cavity
deep to abdominal walls, contains digestive, urinary, and reproductive organs
