What is the sagittal plane?
Left and right → think scalp
What is the coronal plane?
Split anterior and posterior → think crown
What is the axial transverse plane?
Split upper and lower
What is anterior?
Nearer to the front of the body
What is posterior?
Nearer to the back of the body
What is superior/ cranial?
Nearer to the top of the head
What is inferior/ caudal?
Nearer to the soles of the feet
What is medial?
Nearer to the midline/ medial plane
What is lateral?
Further from the midline / medial plane
What is proximal?
Nearer to the attachment of the limb to the body
What is distal?
Further from the attachment of the limb to the body
What is superficial?
Nearer to the surface of the body
What is deep?
Further from the surface of the body
What is dorsal?
Posterior surface of wrist and hand, superior surface of tongue and foot
What is volar?
Anterior surface of wrist
What is palmar?
Anterior surface of the hand
What is ventral?
Inferior surface of tongue
What is plantar?
Inferior surface of the foot
What is unilateral?
Structure found normally on one side of the body
What is bilateral?
Paired structures
What is the midline?
Single structure located on or near the midline / medial plane
What is ipsilateral?
Structure lies on the same side of the body as the other structure or location it is being compared to
What is contralateral?
Structure lies on the opposite side of the body to the other structure or location it is being compared to
What is flexion?
Decreasing the angle between the bones at a joint
