External Rotation
rotation of the hip or shoulder away from the midline
Adduction
moving a body part toward the midline of the body
What is the anatomical position?
- standing upright/erect
- face forward
- eyes forward
- lower limbs parallel, directed forward
- upper limbs at sides, palms forward

Superficial / External definition
Example of use with ribs and lungs
- toward or on the surface of the body
- ribs are superficial to the lungs

Supination
turning the arm or foot upward (palm or sole of the foot up)
Plantar Flexion
ankle movement bringing the foot downward
Lateral Flexion
Side-bending left or right
Abduction
moving a body part away from the midline of the body
Hyperextension
extending a joint beyond its normal range of motion

Inferior / Caudal definition
Example of use with stomach and heart
- away from the head / lower part of a structure
- the stomach is inferior to the heart
Opposition
movement of the thumb across the palm of the hand
Inversion
turning the sole of the foot inward
Circumduction
tri-planar, circular motion at the hip or shoulder
Intermediate definition
Example of use with transverse colon in relation to ascending & descending colons
- between two structures
- transverse colon is intermediate to the ascending & descending colons
Deep / Internal definition
Example of use with ribs & skin of the chest and back
- away from the surface
- ribs are deep to the skin of the chest and back
Posterior / Dorsal definition
Example of use with backbone and lungs
- nearer to / at the back of the body
- backbone is posterior to the lungs
Elevation
raising a part
Supine position
the body is lying faceup
Ipsilateral definition
Example of use with gallbladder and ascending colon
- on the same side of the body
- the gallbladder and ascending colon are ipsilateral
