Sagittal
Divides the body or structure into the mirror images of right and left sides
Mid-sagittal
Made by a vertical cut along the mid-line
Para-sagittal
Vertical cut that cuts the body into unequal left and right sides
Transverse
Divides the body into cranial and caudal sections
Frontal/Coronal
Divides the body into dorsal and ventral sections
Cranial
Toward the head (Superior in humans)
Caudal
Away from the head, towards the tail (Inferior in humans)
Dorsal
The upper surface of a structure (Posterior in humans)
Ventral
Lower surface of a structure (Anterior in humans)
Rostral
Nasal area
Anal
Around the anus
Proximal
Limb closest to the point of origin (shoulder)
Distal
Limb furthest from the point or origin (finger tips/paw)
Medial
Nearest to the midline of the body (waist)
Lateral
Farther from the midline of the body (toes/head)
Ipsilateral
On the same side of the body as another structure
Contralateral
On the opposite side of the body as another structure
Superficial
On the surface of a structure (fur/skin)
Deep
Away from the surface of the body (organs)
Parietal
The outer wall of a body cavity (a wall)
Visceral
The covering of an organ w/in the ventral body cavity (organs)
