What does “Anterior” describe?
Anterior describes something that is toward the front of the body.
What does “Posterior” describe?
Posterior describes something that is toward the back of the body. It also refers to the back of the hand, and the top of the foot.
what does the word “Medial” refer to?
Medial refers to something located toward the middle of the body or away from the side.
What does the word “Lateral” refer to?
Lateral is something that is toward the side of the body or away from the middle.
What does the word “Superior” refer to?
Superior is toward the top or above.
What does the word “Inferior” refer to?
Inferior is toward the bottom, below.
What does the term “Distal” refer to?
Distal refers mainly to the limbs and describes something away from the center of the body.

Proximal is something closer to the center of the body.
What does the term “Deep” refer to, anatomically?
Deep refers to a part of the body that is not visible on the surface.
What does the term “Superficial” mean, anatomically?
Superficial means that a part of the body is visible on the surface.
What does the term “subcutaneous” mean?
Subcutaneous means just below the skin.
