Anatomy Flashcards
(25 cards)
Draw and label the airway anatomy
What does the upper respiratory tract consist of?
- Nose and nasal cavity
- Oral cavity
- Pharynx
- Larynx
Draw and label the upper airway
What is the pharynx divided in to?
- Nasopharynx
- Oropharynx
- Laryngopharynx
Why is the upper airway important?
Ensures air entering the lower airway is warm, damp and clean
What do cilia do?
Filter incoming air
Trap debris
What do goblet cells do?
Produce mucus to trap debris
How many peices of cartilage tissue does the larynx consist of?
9
Three single
Three pairs
Draw and label the larynx
What is the epiglottis?
A leaf shaped peice of elastic cartilage attached to the top of the larynx
Its function is to protect the airway from food and water
It blocks entry to the larynx when swallowing
Draw and label the lower respiratory tract
What does the lower respiratory tract consist of?
Trachea
Right and left primary bronchi
Constituents of the lungs
What is the trachea?
Tubular vessel that carries air from the larynx to the lungs
It is the main bronchi allowing air to reach the lungs
It begins at the cricoid cartilage
It ends at the carina
How many lobes are in the lungs?
Right - 3
Left - 2
Draw and label the lobes of the lung
What are the lungs surrounded by?
Protective membrane called the pleura
What are the 2 layers of the pleura?
- Visceral - inner layer
- Parietal - outer layer
What is the name of the space between the two layers of pleura?
Pleural space which contains fluid
This reduces frinction when breathing
What to the primary bronchi divide into?
Secondary bronchi and each serve a lobe
What do seconary bronchi split into?
Tertiary bronchi
What do tertiary bronchi divide into?
Network of bronchioles which eventually lead to terminal bronchiole
What do the airways end with?
Alveloli which are clustered into a alveolar sacs
Describe the pathway of the lower respiratory tract
- Primary bronchi
- Secondary bronchi
- Tertiary bronchi
- Network of bronchioles
- Terminal bronchiole
- Anveoli
Where does the transfer of oxygen happen?
Bronchiole onwards
