16
Q

Epidermis

A

Protecting the body from the outside as the outermost layer, keeping your skin hydrated, producing new skin cells, and determining your skin color

17
Q

Dermis

A

The middle layer of skin, contains collagen, blood vessels, glands, hair follicles, and nerve endings, support and protect the skin and deeper layers, assist in thermoregulation, aid in sensation

18
Q

Hypodermis (Subcutaneous)

A

The innermost layer of skin, storing energy, connecting the dermis layer of your skin to your muscles and bones, insulating your body, and protecting your body from harm

19
Q

Dermal Papillae

A

Regulate hair growth, protrusions of dermal connective tissue into the epidermal layer

20
Q

Melanocytes

A

Produce and distribute melanin, which is a skin pigment

21
Q

Stratum Corneum

A

First line of defense against the environment; most superficial layer of the epidermis

22
Q

Stratum Lucidum

A

Second layer of the epidermis. Thin, somewhat translucent layer of cells lying superficial to the stratum granulosum and under the stratum corneum, found especially in thickened parts of the epidermic (palms of hands, soles of feet)

23
Q

Stratum Granulosum

A

Third layer of the epidermis. Accumulate dense basophilic keratohyalin granules that contain lipids, helping to form a waterproof barrier which prevents fluid loss from the body

24
Q

Stratum Spinosum

A

Fourth layer of the epidermis. Mostly consists of keratinocytes held together by sticky proteins called desmosomes, helping to make skin flexible and strong

25
Stratum Basale
Fifth and deepest layer of the epidermis. The only layer where proliferation of skin cells can occur, attaches epidermis to the dermis.
26
Sebaceous Glands
Microscopic exocrine glands in the skin that open into a hair follicle to secrete an oily/waxy matter called sebum
27
Sudiferous (Sweat) Glands
Found in the dermis, sweat ducts that transport the secretion to the surface of the epidermis (eccrine glands) or into a hair follicle (apocrine glands)
