Anatomy Flashcards
What is the major venous supply to the thyroid?
Internal jugular and the superior and inferior portions of the middle thyroid veins
The superior larygeal nerve has external and internal branches that innervate which areas of the neck?
Internal-superior to thyroid cartilage and supply taste to to the tounge and epiglottus
External-innervates the cricothyroid muscle and facilitates AB duction of the vocal cords
Which artery and vein run inferior to the thyroid down the midline of the trachea?
Thyroid ima artery and the inferior thyroid vein
Which important parathyroid artery is critical to maintain during surgery of the thyroid? Which arch is this?
Inferior thyroid artery- 3rd pharyngeal arch
Superior thyroid artery is the 4th pharyngeal arch
What’s the purpose of a sestamibi scan? Why might you use a CT scan when dealing with thyroid adenomas?
Help ball park the location of a small thyroid adenoma. This can allow for a more minimally invasive surgery.
CT scan can help locate substernal adenomas
Your patient has a midline mass on the neck that looks like a cyst, what should you do next?
A. Cut it out
B. Ultra sound it
C. Thyroid scan to determine if its thyroid tissue
D. Use PTU to shrink it
C. Thyroid scan
Don’t cut this thing! It is likely a thyroglossal duct cyst but imaging is first.
You get stabbed in the neck coming home from work and end up in the ER, what do you want to tell the doctor if the stab wound is in zone 1 of the neck?
Do an arteriogram first to look for vascular injury (Zone 1, 3)
Zone 2 you can explore.
What’s the first branch of the internal carotid artery in the neck?
There is none, though the external carotid has a few, the first of which is the superior thyroid artery.
What can happen if you stimulate the carotid body during surgery?
It can cause brady cardia
