(18 cards)
Epiphysis
Is at each end of the bone.
Articulate cartilage
The articulating portion of the epiphysis is a layer of hyaline cartilage.
Diaphysis
The shaft of the bone that’s located between the epiphysis.
Periosteum
A tough vascular covering of fibrous tissue.
Compact bone
What the wall of the diaphysis is composed of tightly packed tissue.
Spongy bone
Bone in which the spicules form a latticework, with interstices filled with embryonic connective tissue or bone marrow.
Medullary cavity
Hollow chamber that is continuous with the spaces of spongy bone.
Endosteum
A thin layer of cells.
Marrow
A specialized type of soft connective tissue.
Osteocytes
Located in very small bone chambers.
Intramembranous bones
The broad flat bones of the skull.
Osteoblasts
Bone forming cells
Epiphyseal plate
A band of cartilage
Osteoclasts
Large multinucleated cells
Levers
Bones and muscles interact as simple mechanical devices.
Hematopoiesis
Blood cell formation.
Hemoglobin
Red oxygenated carrying pigment.
Endochondral bones
