Describe Phenylephrine
A selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist - used primarily as a decongestant. Used to dilate the pupil and increase blood pressure.
Phyenylephrine is marketed as a substitute for which drug?
pseudoephedrine.
What is oral phenylephrine metabolised by?
monoamine oxidase
What is an Alpha-1 adrenergic receptor?
a G-protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) associated with the Gq heterotrimeric G-protein. Consisting of 3 highly homologous subtypes Alpha 1a, Alpha 1b, and Alpha 1d adrenergic receptors. Catecholamines like norepinephrine and epinephrine signal through it in the cns and pns.
How is phenylephrine administered typically?
Either as an orally administered tablet, in liquid form, or a dissolving strip.
What are some side effects of Phenylephrine?
Nervousness, dizziness, sleeplessness.
