Anatomy Of Cornea Flashcards
(26 cards)
Volume of the eyeball?
Volume of the orbit?
6ml
30ml
Structure in outer layer of eyeball?
Cornea
Sclera
Limbus
Structures in middle layer of eyeball
Iris
Ciliary body
Choroid
Blood supply of cornea?
Avascular
Nerve supply of cornea?
TON-
Trigeminal nerve= Ophthalmic division ka Nasociliary branch
Corneal sensation is tested by?/
How to diagnose corneal anaesthesia?
By corneal blink reflex using a cotton wisp
Causes of cornea anaesthesia are?
HDL ACTS
H- herpes(99% of times)
D- diabetes
L- leprosy
A- acoustic neuroma
C- contact lens
T- topical timolol ( beta blocker)
S- surgical trauma
Affarent pathway for corneal blink reflex?
Efferent pathway ?
Trigeminal branch
7th CN to orbicularis oculi
What is lagophthalmos?
Inability to blink the eye.
Seen in Bell’s palsy characterised by orbicularis oculi palsy.
Enumerate the layers of cornea?
Outermost Epithelium Bowman's layer Stroma Dua's layer Descemet's membrane Innermost endothelium
Type of epithelium of cornea?
Non keratinised stratified squamous epithelium.
Corneal epithelium can regenerate d/t basal cells in stratified layer.
How will you demonstrate that Bowman’s layer is not a true basement membrane?
It is PAS negative unlike true basement membranes.
Can Bowman’s layer regenerate?
Bowman’s layer is acellular. It heals by scar formation.
Types of corneal opacity?
Nebular(faint)
Macular
Leukomatous(dense/completely white)
Describe macular type of corneal opacity?
In macular, pupillary margin is visible while iris structural details are not visible.
Type of corneal opacity which causes max visual disturbance/distortion?
Nebular.
In this, both pupillary margins and iris structural details are visible.
Which corneal layer contributes to 90% of corneal thickness?
Stroma.
MC type of collagen in it- Type 1
MC type of glycosaminoglycan- Keratin sulphate
Which is the strongest corneal layer?
Dua’s layer
Which layer of cornea is secreted continuously by underlying endothelium?
Descemet’s membrane.
It’s thickness inc throughout life, and can regenerate.
What is schwalbe’s line?
Peripheral termination of descemet’s membrane.
How does corneal endothelium help to maintain corneal transparency?
@ Has active Na-K ATPase to maintain corneal dehydration (cornea becomes hazy if becomes edematous)
@ Has tight junctions between adjacent endothelial cells
Normal endothelial cell count?
2400-3000 cells/mm3
How does corneal endothelium adapt of endothelial cell count is <2400 but >500?
By polymegathism(enlargement of normal cells) And by polymorphism ( cells change their shape to adapt and maintain corneal transparency)
Investigation done for endothelial cell count?
Specular microscopy
