Describe the lobes of the liver.

A
  • Left and right lobe separated by middle hepatic vein
  • Right lobe is separated into caudate (I lobe) and quadrate lobes
  • 8 subdivisions: II-IV left hemiliver, V-VIII right hemiliver
  • Subdivided by divisions of right, middle and left hepatic veins
  • Each segment has own portal pedicle, permitting individual segment resection surgery

How does the blood through the liver?

A
  • From the hepatic artery and portal vein, blood is distributed into the 8 segments and flows into the sinusoids via the portal tracts.
  • Blood leaves the sinusoids into branches of the hepatic vein, which join into 3 main branches before entering the IVC.
