Anatomy & Physiology Of Skin Flashcards
1
Q
What are some of the main cells of the skin?
A
- Langerhans cell (immunity)
- T lymphocyte (immunity)
- Mast cell (inflammatory response, dermis)
- Melanocyte (secrete melanin, this is then taken up into epidermal cells by phagocytosis, found in the basal (bottom) layer)
- Keratinocyte (basal layer then migrate upwards, make keratin (protein gives tissues their strength) skin/nails/hair/
- Fibroblasts (dermis, manufacture collagen)
- Specialized nerve endings (pacinian corpuscles, merkel cells, meissners corpuscles, Krauses end bulbs, ruffini terminals
2
Q
What are the six main functions of Skin?
A
Regulation of body temperature Protection (mechanical damage / UV radiation) Excretion (sweating) Synthesis of vitamin D Immunity Sensation
3
Q
Structure of the skin (how many layers and what are they)?
A
Epidermis (most superficial)
Dermis
Hypodermis/sub-cutaneous tissue
4
Q
Epidermis (how many layers and what are they)?
A
- Stratum germinativum (basal layer)
- Stratum spinosum (prickly layer)
- Stratum granulosum (granular layer)
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum corneum (horny layer)
