Originally ruled by the Egyptian pharaohs
The Persians and then Greeks ruled after the pharaohs.
Following this, the Romans came to Egypt.
The life of a peasant:
Had to work hard all year round
Not allowed to leave their village without permission, could not choose what crops to farm, did not receive their share of the harvest until the emperor had received his, responsible for upkeep of canals, certificates were given out to confirm what work people had done, constant supervision made it very difficult to avoid work.
The peasants were unhappy – many letters of complaint were written to officials.
Why didn’t the Romans change the system and help the peasants?
The Romans were more concerned about making the most of the land and didn’t care about the welfare of the peasants.
