angioedema Flashcards
(7 cards)
characteristics of angioedema
acute edema of SC tissue- not itchy and resolve over hours to several days
Mng of angioedema
Less sedating antihistamines - daily preferred over PRN
If higher doses of less sedating antihistamines dont work , add monteleukast
If symtpoms severe, persistent, distressing -> PO prednisolone
SFX monteleukast
Neuropsychiatric SFX - behavioural, depression, suicidality
Types of angioedema
With urticaria
Without urticaria -> two subtypes: ACEi induced and hereditary - both caused by raised bradykinin rather than histamine
What meds should be avoided in patients with hereditary angioedema
ACEI
Estrogen containing contraceptives
Differentiating between bradykinin and histamine mediated angiodema
Bradykinin mediated would not show response to antihistamines
What meds does bradykinin mediated angioedema respond to
TXA
Icatibant
Purified C1 esterase inhibitor
lanadelumab
