Angle of Loll Flashcards
(8 cards)
Explain what is meant by an angle of loll
The state of a vessel which is unstable when in an upright position and therefore floats at an angle to one side
Explain the relationship between the G and M when a vessel has an angle of loll
When a vessel has an angle of loll, G is above M, meaning that the GM is negative
How would you identify that your vessel has an angle of loll, rather than just an angle of list?
If the vessel is inclined and no cargo has shifted, and the fuel and water tanks are more or less even on both sides, then loll should be suspected.
The stability computer can also be consulted (check whether value of GM is positive or negative)
What are the two methods that can be used to safely get rid of an angle of loll?
- Ballast
2. Remove the cause of the loll
What must you do to G to get rid of an angle of loll?
Lower it to the point where it is below M and GM is therefore once again positive
Name three possible causes of an angle of loll
- Weight being loaded on deck
- Fuel/water is being used from low down in the vessel
- Ice accretion
Explain how to correctly remove an angle of loll by ballasting
You must ballast the lower side of the vessel first (may seem contra to intuition). This is so the vessel does not flop over and capsize.
Explain why ballasting may not be the safest method of getting rid of an angle of loll
Ballasting the vessel low-side first means that the draught, freeboard, and reserve buoyancy will all worsen
