animal and plant cells Flashcards
(11 cards)
what do animal cells contain
animal cells contain a nucleus, cell membrane, mitochondria, cytoplasm and ribosomes
what does the nucleus do
controls all the activities of the cell and is surrounded by the nuclear membrane.
what does the cytoplasm do
a liquid gel in which the organelles are suspended and where most of the chemical reactions needed for life take place.
what does the cell membrane do
controls the passage of substances such as glucose and mineral ions into the cell.
what does the mitochondria do
structures in the cytoplasm where aerobic respiration takes place, releasing energy for the cell. They are very small
what does the ribosomes do
where protein synthesis takes place, making all the proteins needed in the cell.
what do plant cells contain
a plant cell has everything that an animal cell contains including a vacuole, chloroplast and cell wall
what do chloroplast do
chloroplast perform photosynthesis during the day turning the sunlight into energy
what does the cell wall do
it is the rigid cell structure around the cell. it is made out of cellulose and strengthens the cell
what does the vacuole do
it is a space in the cytoplasm filled with cell sap. this keeps the cell rigid and supports the cell
