What are the limitations of animal models

A

Anaesthetised in studies
Conditions are induced
Physiologically different to us
Don’t mimic the clinical situation (timing)
Underpowered with small study sizes
Bias - often not randomised or blinded
Don’t have comorbidies, ageing processes, medications

Describe how animal studies are carried out ethically

A

Animals are anaesthetised
Animals are killed if in pain
Reduced numbers are used
Alternatives to animals are used if possible
They are only used to gain knowledge needed to save life, prolong life or avoid suffering
