Animalia Overview Flashcards
(12 cards)
What is an animal?
Eukaryote organism
-Posses a nucleus enclosed within a membrane
An opishokont organism. An opishokont is a group within the eukaryotes. Animals fall under the opishokont category
-processes a single posterior flagellum
-extracellular digestion (derive energy from outside their cells)
A metazoan organism
-multicellular
-differentiated tissue specialised by function
What can animals do?
Consume organic matter (heterotrophic)
Consume oxygen
Able to move
Reproduce sexually (domnot have to)
Develop a blastula (sphere of cells formed during early embryonic development)
(There are exceptions to these)
What are the total known species of animals?
1,526,000
What are the two main groups of Animalia?
Periphera
Eumetozoa
What is the sub group of eumetozoa?
Bilateria
What is the bilateria divided into?
Deuterostomia
Protostomia
What is the protostomia divided into?
Ecdysozoa
Spiralia
What, in the animal kingdom, are classed as basal metazoans?
Cnidaria
Ctenophora
Placozoa
Porifera
What are the features of basal metazoans?
Either asymmetrical or radially symmetrical
Two layers of cells (interior and exterior)
No organs, but some differentiation of tissues into functions
What, in the animal kingdom, is classed as bilateria?
Everything that isn’t the basal metazoans
What are the features of the bilateria?
Bilateral
-provides the three major axis: left/right, dorsal/ventral, anterior/posterior
Triploblastic
-three layers of cells
-coelom
Complete digestive tract
-seperate mouth and anus
What did animals descend from?
A common, multicellular metazoan
