describe the safety issues and nursing interventions for patients taking antianxiety agents.

A
  1. abrupt withdrawal can be life threatening
    INTERVENTION: instruct medication adherence and never to abruptly stop taking medication; assess patient for tolerance
  2. drowsiness, confusion and lethargy
    INTERVENTION: instruct patient not to drive
  3. symptoms of depression may be aggravated
    INTERVENTIONS: assess patient mood and assess for suicidal risk
  4. orthostatic hypotension
    INTERVENTIONS: instruct slow movements from lying to standing position
  5. effects of other CNS depressants are increased
    INTERVENTION: instruct to not drink alcohol or take other CNS depressants
  6. paradoxical excitement
    INTERVETNIONS: hold medications and notify provider
  7. blood dyscrasias: assess for sore throat, fever, bruising, or unusual bleeding; hold med and report if present
  8. congenital malformations: different treatment modality
