Antiparasitics Flashcards
(21 cards)
Parasiticide
Kills or inhibits internal and/or external parasites
poison that is more toxic to the parasite than the host.
Margin of safety will vary, depending on the truck.
Parasiticide categories
Anthelminctics
Amebicides
Insecticides
Anthelminctics
Kills helminthes
Ex. Nematodes, cestodes
Amebicides
Kills Protoza
Ex. Coccidia
Insecticides
Kills arthopods
Ex. Ticks , lice , etc..
Considerations with antiparasitics
Continual reinfestation occurs - drugs are temporary.
Parasites may develop immunity - efficiency? necessity?
treatment may occur too late - internal damage
stay up-to-date on new drugs.

Poor response
Incorrect drug, dose/administration or timing,
rapid reinfestation

Why is it important to read labels?
To make sure itβs labelled for the correct parasite - because each parasiticide is different!

Avermectins
Most effective - least toxic!
Broad spectrum:
Nematodes (Anthelminctics)
Arthropods (Insecticides) - ectoparasites; lice, mites, ticks
Does NOT kill flukes/tapeworms/protoza (toxoplasma)
Safe.. except..
Murray grey cattle
Collie breeds - ivermectin
Types of avermectins
Ivermectin
Milbemycin oxime
Moxidectin
Doramectin
Eprinomectin - dairy bc 0 WD time
Selamectin
Benzimidazoles
Nematodes (roundworms)
Some cover trematodes(flukes) / cestodes(tapeworm)
Can see vomiting/dirrhea - drontal
Embryotoxicity - DONT USE WHEN PREGO!!
Albendazole - aplastic anemia in dogs/ cats/humans
Tetrahydropyrimidines
NARROW SPECTRUM!
(Mature & some migrating nematodes)
Adverse side effects:
Increase RR, ataxia, profuse sweating
Ascarids (equine) ,
nematodes (equine),
strongyles (equine/bovine/ovine),
Hookworms (feline / canine )
Organophosphate
Insects/ mites/ limited nematodes
ALL ARE TOXIC TO MAN & ANIMAL!!
ππ
Excessive salivation, vomiting, dirrhea, miosis, muscle tremors
Praziquantel/ epsiprantel
All canine & feline cestodes
(Including echinococcus- most resistant tapeworm!)
TAPEWORMS!!- dogs/cats/horses
SAFE:
Better than other tapeworm Anthelminctics! π₯
Safe in prego dogs π€°π
Not recommended for littles πΆ β
Up to 40x dosage for toxicity
Nitroscanate
Roundworms
Hookworms
Tapeworms
Dogs
Safe!
Amitraz
Ticks / lice / mites
Toxic to cats and rabbits βπ° π±
Sedation
Hypothermia
Hyperglycaemia
Seizures
Pyrethrins
Extracted from chrysanthemum flower πΈ
Usually combine w other insecticides
Fleas / lice / other insects
Pyrethroids
Similar to pyrethrins
More residual effect
Topical use
SEIZURES in CATS
