Antipsychotics (Typical & Atypical) Flashcards
(37 cards)
What is the main mechanism of action for antipsychotics?
Block dopamine D2 receptors (some also block serotonin 5HT2A)
What’s the difference between first-generation and second-generation antipsychotics?
• First-gen (FGAs) = Strong D2 blockade → more EPS
• Second-gen (SGAs) = D2 + 5HT2A blockade → fewer EPS, better for negative symptoms
What symptoms of schizophrenia do FGAs treat best?
Positive symptoms (e.g., hallucinations, delusions)
What symptoms do SGAs treat better than FGAs?
Negative symptoms (e.g., flat affect, social withdrawal)
