1
Q

Name some RNA viruses

A

Influenza
HIV
Hepatitis C

2
Q

What is influenza A?

A

Birds and some mammals
Antigenic drift and shift
Seasonal epidemic
Pandemic potential

3
Q

What is Influenza B?

A

No animal reservoir

Lower mortality

4
Q

What is Influenza C?

A

Like the common cold

5
Q

What are some high risk groups for Influenza?

A

Elderly
Airway and Cardiac Diseases
Diabetes
Renal failure

6
Q

Explain the life cycle of a virus

A

Gets absorbed into host cell by Endocytosis
Transported through cytoplasm in an endosomal vesicle
Vesicle is uncoated
RNA replication and synthesis of viral proteins
Assembly of RNA and viral protein
Budding of new particle out of cell
Release

7
Q

How do Amantanades work?

A

M2 ion channel blocker
M2 channel is needed to transport protons into virion
This disintegrates the virion and allows RNA replication and viral protein synthesis
By blocking it, you stop the virion from disintegrating

8
Q

What does Amantanade work on?

A

Influenza A only

9
Q

What are ADRs of Amantanades?

A

CNS effects

Renal effects

10
Q

How does Neuraminidase work in viral replication?

A

Allows virion to be released from the cell

Also increases mobility of virion through mucus in the resp tract

11
Q

What do Neuraminidase Inhibitors work against?

A

Influenza A and B

12
Q

What are the ADRs of Neuraminidase inhibitors?

A

Nausea and vomiting

13
Q

What are some examples of Neuraminidase Inhibitors?

A

Zanamavir

Oseltamivir

14
Q

What is a major problem with regard to Amantandes and Neuraminidase Inhibitors?

A

Viruses developing Resistance to them

15
Q

Name some DNA viruses

A

Herpes Simplex
Varicella Zoster
Epstein Barr Virus
