anxiety Flashcards
(20 cards)
what is arousal?
the energised state of the readiness for action that motivates us to behave in a certain way
what are the two sub-sections of arousal?
somatic and cognitive
what is somatic arousal?
it relates to the changing physiological factors (sweating)
what is cognitive arousal?
relates to the changing psychological state of the body (increased anxiety)
what is arousal controlled by?
Reticular Activating System (RAS)
what is an example of low arousal?
pre season friendly in football (low level of competition)
what is an example of high arousal?
a penalty kick which would help your team win in football
what is ‘drive theory’ ?
It suggests that the higher your arousal the better ones performance becomes
who proposed the idea of drive theory?
Hull (1943)
what equation is used in ‘drive theory’ ?
P = f ( H x D )
P - performance
F - function
H - habit strength
D - drive/arousal
what are two strengths of drive theory?
+ useful to apply to simple skills
+ easy to use in coaching
what is a weakness of drive theory?
- even highly skilled players ‘choke’ in highly charging situations
what is ‘chocking’ ?
it is the faliure of a person to act or behave as anticipated or expected
what is drive reduction?
an individual may be motivated to complete a task; which can be seen as drive
- when that drive is perceived as being fulfilled the drive is reduced
what is the ‘Inverted U Theory’ ?
this theory suggests there is an optimum arousal level and if aroused more than this, performance will decline
who proposed the idea of the Inverted U Theory?
Yerkes and Dodson (1908)
what factors would make the curve shift?
- skill level
- crowd (external factors)
- past experiences
- personality
what type of athlete would perform better with low arousal?
novices get overwhelmed easier meaning they need low arousal for optimal performance
what type of athlete needs high arousal?
experts are better at managing pressure meaning they can perform better at higher arousal
what is cognitive anxiety?
experienced in the mind
