Benzodiazepines Drugs

Diazepam, lorazepam, chlordiazepoxide, clorazepate, oxazepam, clonazepam
Benzos purpose
Sedative hypnotic anxiolytic
inhibits GABA in the CNS eliciting relief from anxiety. Short term use because of potential dependence.
Benzo Therapeutic Uses
General anxiety disorder, panic disorders, trauma, acute stress disorder, PTSD, seizures, insomnia, muscle spasm, alcohol withdrawal, induction of anesthesia, and amnesic for surgery..
What is barbiturate and nonbarbiturate
Barbiturate have hypnotic or sedative; vice versa
Which drug is nonbarbiturate/atypical anxiolytic?
Buspirone
Complication of Benzo
CNS Depression (sedation and ataxia: overall poor muscle control)
Anterograde Amnesia

Benzo acute toxicity protocol
S/S: respiratory depression, severe hypotension, or cardiac/respiratory arrest
Nursing Action:
Flumazenil (reversal agent) and resuscitation equipment ready.
Benzo Withdrawal Effect S/S
Anxiety, insomnia, diaphoresis, tremors, lightheadedness, delirium, HTN, muscle twitching, and seizures
Benzo Contraindication
Dependence, pregnancy (can transfer from milk), sleep apnea, respiratory depression, glaucoma, and liver disease
Benzo interaction
CNS depression, grapefruit juice, high fat meals.
Benzo administration
Administer with meals and at bedtime if possible
Atypical anxiolytic/nonbarbiturate anxiolytic drugs

Controls mood by influencing sleep, pain, sexual desire, and increase in serotonin may help with depression
Dopamine
Controls feeling of purpose, pleasure, satisfaction, and motivation.
Buspirone complications
GI problems (take with food), constipation, and SI
Buspirone contraindivations
Pregnancy, decrease liver or kidney function, concurrent use with MAOI (can use after stopping for 14 days of MAOIs use - HTN crisis can occur)
SSRI Drugs
Paroxetine, sertraline, citalopram, escitalopram, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine
