Q

where does the abdominal aorta begin and end?

A

starts at T12

ends at L4-5 at bifurication of the RCI and LCI

Q

what are the 3 major anterior branches of the abdominal aorta? (unpaired)

what are the levels of each?

A
  1. Celiac trunk - T12
  2. superior mesenteric artery- L1
  3. inferior mesenteric artery - L3
18
Q

what does the celiac trunk supply? what are its branches?

A

the foregut (oral cavity to the initial part of the duodenum)

  1. Left gastric
  2. splenic
  3. common hepatic

(oesophagus, stomach, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen and duodenum)

19
Q

what does the superior mesenteric artery supply? SMA? branches?

A

the midgut (mid-duodenum to the proximal 2/3 of the transverse colon)

  • middle and right colic arteries
  • ileocolic
  • jejunal & ileal

(jejunum, ilium, caecum, ascending 2/3 transverse colon)

20
Q

what does the inferior mesenteric artery supply? IMA? branches?

A

the hindgut ( distal 1/3 transverse colon, rest of bowel, 1/3 rectum)

  • left colic
  • sigmoid
  • superior rectal
21
Q

what are the paired arteries of the abdominal aorta?

A
  • lumbar arteries
  • inferior phrenic (superior adrenal)
  • middle adrenal (inferior adrenal)
  • renal
  • gonadal
22
Q

what do the lumbar arteries supply?

A

lumbar region, vertebrae, spinal cord, abdominal wall

23
Q

what do the gonadal arteries supply?

A

either ovaries or testes
