Q

What are the causes of Aortic stenosis?

Q

What are the signs of Aortic stenosis?

A
  • ejection systolic murmur best heard in the aortic area, radiating to carotids.
  • slow-rising pulse, with a narrow pulse pressure.
  • Heave
  • possible signs of heart failure / pulmonary hypertension (crackles at lung bases, pink frothy sputum, oedema)
  • possible signs of AF (irregularly irregular pulse)

16
Q

what should be done after surgery to avoid bacterial endocarditis?

A

patients put on antibiotics

17
Q

How long do prosthetic valves last?

A

10 years

18
Q

what is the advantage of prosthetic valves?

A

no need for long term anticoagulant therapy

19
Q

How long do metal valves last?

A

lifetime

20
Q

what are the disadvantages of metal valves?

A

require anticoagulant therapy for life. Also noisy

21
Q

What are the 3 types of metal valves?

A

titling disc
double tilting disc
ball in a cage
